Shyness and social anxiety are not the same, although the differences are a matter of degree. Lots of people are shy. When I was growing up I was shy. I never felt comfortable in groups. I never knew how to make chit chat. I could make conversation with one person at a time, but when someone else joined in, I disappeared into the background. You could say my social skills were underdeveloped.

When I first went to work after quitting graduate school, I was constantly in a state of fight or flight. If someone asked me question, I would turn beat red, my heart would race, and my hand wil be sweating. haha. But this is becoz of my shyness n social anxiety.

Shyness and Social Anxiety -- Fear of What?

Social Anxiety or social phobia involves an irrational fear.. But what fear is tat really?

It's not about being in a group, but being in the spotlight where others can an*lyze you, being judged (negatively), being laughed at, being wrong, or looking stupid. swing.GIF

If you are shy you might fear rejection, be sensitive to criticism, have trouble being assertive or acting with self-confidence. But with social anxiety, your self-image is already so vulnerable that you don't want to open yourself at all to the possibility of criticism, rejection, or failure. meeting.GIF

Shyness and Social Anxiety -- 2 Major Differences.

Two things really distinguish social anxiety from shyness:

1. There are the extreme physical symptoms, common with panic attacks, such as embarrassing, red hot blushing, uncontrollable sweating, rapid heartbeat, nausea, dizziness, chest pain, tingling sensations, tightness in the muscles, headaches, difficulty swa11owing, shallow breathing or shortness of breath or even inability to breathe, and more.

2. Whereas shyness may hamper your social life to a degree, social anxiety so screws up your normal functioning that it can bring life beyond your home to a screeching halt. It may not only affect social situations, but work, and even going out in public to the grocery store or the bank or even out for a walk in the park.

Tips for Overcoming Social Shyness

* Make up a phone partner. It could be your spirit guide, your lover, friend, employer, etc. Talk to him or her about something you heard on the news, something that is on your mind, or something that happened to you today. You could do this in your car or sitting at a park bench during your lunch hour. Nobody will be the wiser.

* Talk to yourself in the mirror and imagine your higher-self looking back at you. Greet yourself each morning. Be complimentary and encouraging. After all, your higher-self has your best interest at heart.

* Pick two inanimate objects. Imagine what your desk lamp and computer mouse would have to say to each other. Decide on the personality traits of each, and have at it. What they say may surprise even you. Whisper if you need to or just write it down.

* Record or tape yourself doing a presentation on a topic of interest. Be silly and have fun. You may start by getting a little portable recorder to record your ''to do'' lists and add comments as you go.

Finally, if you think you have social anxiety more, see your doctor right away. You need to stabilize yourself first, and medication may help you do that. crazydoc.GIF
